Our History
The Society was inaugurated on the 09th October 1920 when a group of distinguished people met to form a Buddhist Social Service Organization for the purpose of taking vision of Ms Mallika Hewavitarne.
This noble lady who was full of kindness and compassion wished to ensure that old and destitute women would have a roof over their heads and be cared for until their passing. The Society was initially named the ' Mallika Anatha Niwasa Samithiya ' and later the name was changed to ' Mallika Niwasa Samithiya '. Ms Hewavitarne had the fullest support of her son Dr C A Hewavitarne in this venture.
Over the decades, the Society has grown into a respected institution, serving generations of women in need. Guided by the founding principles of compassion and service, it continues to uphold the legacy of Ms. Hewavitarne by providing not just shelter, but also love, respect, and a sense of belonging to its residents.
